A crown is a specially designed cover (also known as a ‘cap’) which fits over an unsightly tooth to improve its appearance and functionality. Crowns can mask broken, decayed or discoloured teeth, or those with extensive fillings. They are made from durable materials such as porcelain, ceramic or metal alloys.
Before we fit a crown, we prepare the tooth by reducing its size but still leave a strong core. We then take impressions so a tailor-made crown can be produced. While the crown is being made, a temporary restoration will be fitted to protect the prepared tooth. Finally, after being checked for fit and appearance, the permanent crown is fixed over the tooth.
